March in the Footsteps of Heroes Vrba–Wetzler Memorial
On the route between the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and Žilina, one of the most dramatic stories of modern 20th-century history unfolded. In April 1944, two Slovak Jewish prisoners – Alfréd Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba, born Walter Rosenberg, escaped from Birkenau.
They wanted the world to learn about what was happening behind the barbed wires of the largest Nazi death factory.
That people were being systematically and industrially murdered here. Therefore, let us not forget their courageous act and heroic story!
